Summit Entertainment got into the High School Musical trend with Bandslam, a teen comedy about a singer-songwriter who asks the new kid in town to help her rock band beat her egotistical musician ex-boyfriend at a battle of the bands. The movie was released on DVD on March 16, 2010.
High School Musical‘s Vanessa Hudgens stars, along with Alyson Michalka (TV’s Phil of the Future), Gaelen Connell (Chocolat), Scott Porter (Speed Racer) and Friends‘ Lisa Kudrow.
Rated PG, the movie was priced at $25.99 on DVD. It hasn’t been released on Blu-ray.
Hudgens gives a special musical performance in the special features. The DVD also includes:
- a 22-minute making-of featurette
- commentary with Hudgens, Michalka, Connell and director Todd Graff, whose first movie was the teen musical Camp (Todd also acted in the film as the Screaming Teacher)
- nine deleted or extended scenes
- and a music video.
Shot in Austin during the South By Southwest Music Festival, Bandslam features many of the real bands that performed as well as festival attendees.
The movie had a theatrical run, but it was quick, earning only $5 million.
