New Release: Spartacus and A Star is Born Blu-ray

Universal Studios Home Entertainment released classic movie Spartacus as a 50th Anniversary Edition Blu-ray on May 25, 2010, priced at $26.98. Stanley Kubrick’s (A Clockwork Orange) 1960 Roman slave epic, the winner of four Oscars (supporting actor for Peter Ustinov, art direction, cinematography and costume design) stars Kirk Douglas (Paths of Glory) as Spartacus himself, Laurence Olivier (Rebecca) and Jean Simmons (Big Country).

Universal’s 50th Anniversary of Kubrick’s Spartacus will come with plenty of special features:

  • deleted scenes
  • interviews with Ustinov and Jean Simmons
  • behind-the-scenes footage
  • vintage newsreels
  • theatrical trailer
  • production stills
  • concept art
  • costume designs
  • Saul Bass storyboards
  • posters and print ads
  • Universal’s My Scenes bookmarking technology
  • and BD Live access.

A Star is Born Blu-ray boxAnother classic film that debuted on Blu-ray around the same is 1954’s musical A Star is Born, starring Judy Garland (The Wizard of Oz) and James Mason (Lolita), who both won Golden Globes for best actress and best actor, respectively. The movie also was nominated for six Academy Awards.

Released on high-definition on June 22, 2010, Warner Home Video‘s A Star is Born was restored by Warner Bros. Motion Picture Imaging. The Blu-ray ($34.99) will be a two-disc book with 40 pages of photography, press materials and an essay by film historian John Fricke.

As for special features, the Deluxe Special Edition disc will include alternate takes, deleted scenes, excerpts from Garland’s audio recording sessions.

Warner plans to premiere its restored movie at the Opening Night Red Carpet Gala of the TCM Classic Film Festival at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood on April 22. Plus, the release will be featured in TCM programming.

The classic musical, about the doomed marriage of an entertainer whose career is rising (Garland) while her husband’s is falling (Mason), was directed by George Cukor (My Fair Lady).
