Director Chris Weitz’s addition to the Twilight Saga looks beautiful on Blu-ray. The deep greens and blacks in the woods where the vampires and werewolves roam and the bright red of the cloaks in the Italy scenes are wonderfully saturated. Audio is equally good, with the werewolves’ roars and the crashes in the climactic fight scene resonating through the speakers.
Of course, the Blu-ray also shows off Kristen Stewart’s constant lip quivers and incessant heavy breathing.
Not as good as the first Twilight movie, New Moon suffers from a drab, cliche script and slow pacing. That won’t stop fans of the book series from lining up to pick up their copy.
On the special features side, the Blu-ray has a commentary with director Weitz and editor Peter Lambert, music videos, rehearsal footage from the band Muse and a six-part documentary.
The production parts of the documentary are most interesting, delving into the locations, visual effects and costumes and giving away that the scene outside the high school was actually filmed in a parking lot with green screen and the high school itself was put in later. Fans will be thrilled to see the actors behind the scenes, but they mostly discuss how excited they are and how everyone working on the film is a genius. Teen fans of the series might not care, because for them, watching this movie is more an experience extended from the books, but others will fast-forward for something more geniune.
Out the same day is documentary Twilight in Forks, about the town Meyer chose as the setting for her books.
