New Release: Disney’s Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray and DVD

Beauty and the Beast movie sceneWalt Disney Studios Home Entertainment released its 1991 animated film Beauty and the Beast on high-definition for the first on Oct. 5, 2010, with a new special DVD on Nov. 23, 2010. The release follows Disney’s plan to encourage fans to upgrade to the high-definition format.

The Blu-ray version was a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack priced at $39.99, and the two-DVD set was priced at $29.99.

Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray boxA new take on the classic fairy tale, Beauty and the Beast was the first animated movie to be nominated for the Best Picture Oscar. (Second was Disney’s Up in 2010.) Beauty won an Academy Award for its music and three Golden Globes for Best Motion Picture, Best Original Score and Best Original Score.

The family movie’s voice cast includes stage actress Paige O’Hara as Belle, Robby Benson (TV’s American Dreams) as Beast, Angela Lansbury (TV’s Murder She Wrote) as Mrs. Potts, the late Jerry Orbach (TV’s Law & Order) as Lumiere and David Ogden-Stiers (TV’s M*A*S*H) as Cogsworth.

Beauty and the Beast also is scheduled for release on Blu-ray 3D.
