New Release: Avatar DVD and Blu-ray

Avatar movie sceneJust like its global theatrical release, mega-grossing science-fiction film Avatar (more than $2.6 billion worldwide) arrived on DVD and Blu-ray the same day around the world. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment chose April 22, 2010, for the launch of Avatar, quite fitting for the environmentally friendly story, as that was the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

The initial DVD release was priced at $29.98 and Blu-ray at $39.99. These are vanilla — so vanilla, the discs don’t even have trailers. “For the Blu-ray, we wanted to put together the best picture and sound quality possible that will utilize ALL of the disc space,” my PR source said. With the bigger capacity Blu-ray already offers, that promises one incredible looking and sound movie. (Read our review.)

Of course, I know what you’re thinking. NO special features? At all?! On a James Cameron movie that’s so VFX heavy? Don’t despair, Fox released an Avatar Extended Collector’s Edition in November 2010 with lots of special features. (Read our review.)

The movie was been widely forecast to be the first movie released on Blu-ray 3D, but it wasn’t. (Sony’s Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs was the first catalog title and Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore the first new release.) Avatar has been available on Blu-ray 3D in bundles with Panasonic equipment.

Nominated for nine Oscars and winner of three, Avatar stars Sam Worthington (Clash of the Titans) as a crippled marine in the future who’s sent to a far-off planet to replace his dead brother in an avatar program run by Sigourney Weaver (Alien). Worthington’s mission is to inhabit an avatar of one of the aliens native to the planet, then infiltrate their community and convince them to leave an area that the marines want to mine. Problems arise when he falls for one of the aliens (Zoe Saldana, The Losers) and the mining supervisor (Giovanni Ribisi, Middle Men) pushes for faster results. Michelle Rodriguez (Battle: Los Angeles) and Stephen Lang (White Irish Drinkers) also co-star.
