Fantastical director Tim Burton’s take on Lewis Carroll‘s classic Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on June 1, 2010. The movie grossed a tidy $319 million at the domestic box office and is approaching $800 million worldwide.
Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment celebrated that success by bringing out the fantasy film in a single DVD ($29.99), a single Blu-ray ($39.99) and a three-disc Blu-ray/DVD combo with digital copy ($44.99). The Blu-ray versions have two different covers.
Alice in Wonderland stars Burton movie regular Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter, Helena Bonham Carter as the Red Queen, Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Mia Wasikowska as Alice.
A combination of Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and its followup Through the Looking Glass, as well as Burton’s imagination, the movie tells the story of 19-year-old Alice’s return to Wonderland, just in time to save it from the Red Queen’s jabborwocky.
The DVD contains three featurettes:
• “Finding Alice,” including Burton’s vision for the characters, differences from the book and Disney’s version of Alice and how she evolves as both a character and actor as she takes an adventure through Wonderland.
• “The Mad Hatter,” a deeper look into the world of the character, including Johnny Depp’s early sketches, makeup, costumes and how his eyes were digitally enhanced.
• “Effecting Wonderland,” a behind-the-scenes piece on the technologies used to create some of the characters, including Stayne, Tweedledee, Tweedledum, Bandersnatch and the Red Queen.
The Blu-ray has those and:
• “The Futterwacken Dance,” the making of the dance
• “The Red Queen,” about the character’s creation, including early Tim Burton sketches showcasing costume designs, makeup and digital effects
• “Time-Lapse: Sculpting the Red Queen,” showing the makeup applied to Helena Bonham Carter
• “The White Queen,” interview with Anne Hathaway
• “Scoring Wonderland,” with composer Danny Elfman and Tim Burton discussing the film’s music
• “Stunts of Wonderland,” highlighting some of the biggest stunts in the movie
• “Making the Proper Size,” about the visual effects process of growing and shrinking Alice
• “Cakes of Wonderland,” a look at “Cake Divas” where the creators of the EAT ME cakes show how they made the smallest crumb to the largest cake in scale
• “Tea Party Props,” with prop master Doug Harlocker giving an overview of all the props used to bring the famous tea party scene together visually
