Oscar nominee for cinemtography and best foreign-language film, The White Ribbon arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on June 29, 2010, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
The German film won the Golden Globe for best foreign-language film and played at numerous festivals including Cannes. Rated R, the drama grossed $2.2 million in a limited theatrical run at the box office.
The movie is set on the eve of World War I, when strange accidents in a small Protestant village in Northern Germany involve the children and teenagers of a choir run by the schoolteacher and their families. The abused and suppressed children of the villagers seem to be at the heart of this mystery as these events gradually take on the character of a punishment ritual.
The Blu-ray will include:
- “Making of The White Ribbon”
- “My Life” featurette
- Cannes Film Festival premiere
- interview with director Michael Haneke
On DVD, the movie appears to be coming out vanilla. But both the DVD and Blu-ray will have English subtitles for the 144-minute film.
