The film version of author Stieg Larsson‘s best-selling novel The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on July 6, 2010. This is the Swedish movie version; Hollywood is still working on its own version, which is scheduled to be released in theaters in 2012 with An Education‘s Carey Mulligan as the girl and Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and George Clooney also set to star.
The Swedish movie, distributed on DVD and Blu-ray by Music Box Films, grossed an impressive $4.6 million in a limited theatrical release in the U.S.
In the movie, a disgraced financial journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Michael Nyqvist) and the tattooed and troubled but resourceful computer hacker Lisbeth Salander (Noomi Rapace) are hired to investigate a murder. Their digging links the victim’s disappearance to grotesque murders from almost 40 years ago, as they unravel a dark and appalling family history. But now Blomkvist and Salander must protect themselves.
Directed by Niels Arden Oplev, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo is the highest-grossing movie in Swedish history. It won three Swedish Guldbaggage Awards last years, for Best Picture, Audience Award and Best Actress in a Leading Role. It also received the Audience Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival and the Best Narrative Feature Award at the Portland International Film Festival.
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo book is the first in the Millenium Trilogy Series, which has sold more than 25 million copies in more than 40 countries around the world. The Swedish movie version of the second book, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and third, The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, also are on DVD and Blu-ray.
The Dragon Tattoo DVD was priced at $29.95, Blu-ray at $34.95, and the movie is in Swedish with English subtitles or dubbed in English.
The discs have three special features:
- interview with Rapace
