Among the classic films restored and available on DVD through the Warner Archive Collection are Five Star Final (1931), Verboten (1959) and Two On a Guillotine (1965).
If you haven’t heard of Warner’s Archive Collection, it’s a different way of distributing movies on DVD for the studio, using print on demand. Instead of producing a few thousand discs and shipping them to retail, Warner burns a disc only when a consumer or retailer buys it on the Warner Archive Collection website. This way, movies that have a somewhat smaller potential audience still get a release on DVD without the higher costs of a full DVD release.
The remastered movies have been available on DVD since June 22, 2010. Each disc was priced at $24.95.
Five Star Final stars Edward G. Robinson (Soylent Green) in the frenzied world of tabloid journalism. A headline-hungry editor uncovers an unsolved murder mystery, and the crime of passion affects the lives of all involved.
In cult classic film Two On a Guillotine, directed by William Conrad (TV’s Cannon), a woman trying to collect her inheritance, must survive seven nights in a house of horrors once owned by her father, a maniacal magician. The movie stars Connie Stevens (James Dean: Race With Destiny), Dean Jones (The Love Bug) and Cesar Romero (TV’s Falcon Crest).
Samuel Fuller’s controversial classic movie Verboten is about the forbidden love between an American serviceman and a young woman in post-World War II Germany. The film includes documentary footage from Fuller’s own war-era archives.
