Strand Releasing debuted the historical drama film John Rabe on DVD on Sept. 7, 2010, priced at $27.99.
Based on a true story, the movie stars Ulrich Tukur (The White Ribbon) as a German businessman who rescued more than 200,000 Chinese during the Nanking Massacre in China by negotiating a safety zone away from the Japanese army.
The drama, which also stars Steve Buscemi (The Big Lebowski), Daniel Bruhl (Inglourious Basterds) and Anne Consigny (The Diving Bell and the Butterfly), is taken from the 1937 diaries of the real Rabe, who, among other acts, hid Chinese refuges in his garden.
Despite his humanitarian efforts before World War II, Rabe joined Hitler’s Nazi party during the war. His later actions don’t stop the Chinese from revering Rabe as a hero, according to the movie’s press materials.
The John Rabe movie was released in a handful of theaters, but this DVD will be the first availability for most viewers.
The critically acclaimed 134-minute film is in English, German, Cantonese, Mandarin, Japanese and Ukranian with English subtitles.
It won four German Film Awards, among other international honors.
