News: The Office and Blu-ray go VOD

Blu-ray is expanding its offerings to video-on-demand.

The Office: Season Six TV show sceneUniversal Studios Home Entertainment is adding a new VOD special feature to its The Office: Season Six Blu-ray, being released on Sept. 7. Consumers who purchase the three-disc Blu-ray set will be able to watch the new season seven episodes online through their player’s BD-Live Internet connection after they air on television.

Like Hulu.com’s general video release pattern, Universal will offer through BD-Live the last five episodes of The Office season seven after they have aired on TV. The episodes will be available in high-definition, depending on Internet connection speeds.

Meanwhile, a new technology is giving pay-TV operators the opportunity to offer their video-on-demand libraries through consumers’ Blu-ray players.

Web-based TV platform Clearlap and Related Content Database have announced a joint solution enabling Blu-ray player owners to access pay-TV operators’ VOD content without another set-top box.

The system combines Clearlap’s cloud-based content management and delivery platform with RCDb’s Blu-ray Disc software, enterprise server and data services.

The VOD content is made available through the Blu-ray player’s BD-Live Internet connection and streamed by Clearlap’s TV platform.

No news yet on whether any pay-TV operators have signed up to offer their VOD service through Blu-ray players.
