New Release: Arcimboldo, 1526-1593 DVD

Arcimboldo, 1526-1593, a documentary on Giuseppe Arcimboldo, one of the most inventive artists of 16th Century Europe, arrived on DVD from Microcinema on Sept. 28, 2010.

Narrated by Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), Arcimboldo takes a look at both the man and his paintings.

Arcimboldo’s imaginative combinations of fruits, vegetables and flowers created allegorical portraits of emperors and witty caricatures of their courtiers, all of which won him the highest artistic honors bestowed by the Roman Empire.

His works reveal the mind of an artist deeply influenced by the new discoveries and new worlds that came to light during the Age of Exploration.

The documentary Arcimboldo combines original high-definition footage of the artist’s native Milan and the Habsburg palaces of Vienna and Prague with images of Arcimboldo’s work as a court painter, designer of festivals and chronicler of the natural world.

The half-hour-long Arcimboldo carried a suggested retail price of $19.99 on DVD.
