New Release: Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Blu-ray/DVD

On Nov. 2, 2010, MGM Home Entertainment, through its distributor 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, released a remastered version of the classic 1968 musical fantasy Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Blu-ray. Featuring an upgraded 7.1 DTS-HD master audio track and new games, this first-time Blu-ray release includes an original version of the film on DVD.

Based on the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang: The Magical Car by Ian Fleming — yep, the same Ian Fleming who wrote the James Bond novels — the film tells the story of an eccentric professor (Dick Van Dyke) who invents wacky machinery but can’t seem to make ends meet. When he invents a revolutionary car, a foreign government becomes interested in it and resorts to skullduggery to get their hands on it. The all-time family classic takes viewers on a magical ride with the professor and his loveable motorcar.

As part of “the most fantasmagorical musical entertainment in the history of everything,” according to the press release, the remastered version of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on Blu-ray includes such special features as the new “Toot Sweet Symphony” melody maker and “Chitty Chitty’s Bang Bang Driving Game!” Other bonuses are “Remembering Chitty Chitty Bang Bang” with Dick Van Dyke, song demos from the Sherman Brothers and a featurette entitled “A Fantasmagorical Motorcar.”

The Blu-ray/DVD combo pack was released with the suggested retail price of $34.99. MGM/Fox packaged the movie in two ways for retail shelves: a Blu-ray/DVD combo pack in the regular Blu-ray box to be stocked in the Blu-ray section and a DVD/Blu-ray combo pack in the standard amaray DVD case for DVD shelves.
