Documentary A Mother’s Courage: Talking Back to Autism, narrated by Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet (Titanic, Hamlet), debuted on DVD on Oct. 26, 2010, from First Run Features.
Directed by Oscar-nominee filmmaker Fridik Thor Fridriksson (Children of Nature), the movie A Mother’s Courage follows Margret, a mother trying to unlock her 10-year-old autistic son’s mind and help him function in the world. In her search for help, Margret travels from her home in Iceland to meet with experts and advocates in the United States and Europe. She also connects with other families touched by autism who have similar struggles to her’s, including endless doctor visits, experiments with different treatments, the complications of everyday tasks and, the most painful and frustrating aspect of the condition, the inability to communicate with her own child.
Among the experts Margret visits are:
- Dr. Temple Grandin, best-selling author and autism advocate, as well as the subject of HBO’s Emmy-winning movie starring Claire Danes (Stardust)
- Dr. David G. Amaral, research director at Medical Investigation of Neurodevelopmental Disorders (MIND) Institute
- Dr. Simon Baron-Cohen, director of the Autism Research Center at the University of Cambrigde
- Dr. Geraldine Dawson, chief science officer at Autism Speaks
- Soma Mukhopadhyay, who developed the Rapid Prompting Method to teach her autistic son, who’s now a published author
- and Portia Iverson and Jonathan Shestack, parents of an autistic child and founders of Cure Autism Now.
The Mother’s Courage documentary was an official selection of the Toronto Film Festival and premiered in theaters in the U.S. on Sept. 24, 2010, in a limited release.
The DVD was priced at $29.95.
