The first movie written and directed by The Sopranos‘ Michael Imperioli, the indie drama The Hungry Ghosts was released on DVD by Virgil Films & Entertainment on Nov. 2, 2010, for a suggested retail price of $24.99.
The 2009 independent film, which had its world premiere at the Rotterdam International Film Festival, stars Imperioli’s fellow Sopranos veterans Steve Schirripa (TV’s The Secret Life of an American Teenager) and Sharon Angela (Two Family House), along with Aunjanue Ellis (Men of Honor), Nick Sandow (Swimfan) and newcomer Emory Cohen.
Taking its title from a Buddhist metaphor for the insatiable desires of those incapable of appreciating their own surroundings, The Hungry Ghosts offers a collection of intertwining stories about five struggling New Yorkers who are overpowered by their thirst for mental, physical and spiritual fulfillment. Like The Sopranos, drugs, gambling and overall nastiness play a part in the story.
The movie received a theatrical premiere in New York on Oct. 1, 2010, followed by its DVD debut a month later.
Special features on the disc include behind-the-scenes footage, a photo gallery and a trailer.
