Doctor Who tackles Scrooge in the special Christmas episode Doctor Who: A Christmas Carol, which BBC issued on DVD and Blu-ray on Feb. 15, 2011, through distributor Warner Home Video. The release was priced at $14.98 on DVD and $19.98 on Blu-ray.
The Christmas episode of the popular science-fiction adventure TV show premiered on BBC America Christmas Day, the first time an episode of Doctor Who debuted in the U.S. and U.K. on the same day.
In A Christmas Carol, British actors Matt Smith (TV’s Secret Diary of a Call Girl) and Karen Gillan (Outlast) return as the Doctor and his companion, alongside guest stars Michael Gambon (the Harry Potter series) and opera diva Katherine Jenkins.
The Charles Dickens-inspired story follows newlyweds Amy (Gillan) and Rory (Arthur Darvill of Robin Hood) as they are trapped on a crashing space liner. The only way The Doctor can rescue them is to save the soul of a lonely old miser, Kazran Sardick (Gambon). But is Sardick, the richest man in Sardicktown, beyond redemption? And what is lurking in the fogs of Christmas Eve?
Special features on the DVD and Blu-ray include a behind-the-scenes featurette and the live concert Doctor Who at the Proms 2010, featuring stars Smith, Gillan and Darvill as hosts.
