The Last International Playboy ponders the question of what the lifestyle of a carefree, ridiculously handsome, obscenely wealthy heir with a handful of supermodel girlfriends is like, and its answer might surprise you. We bet you wouldn’t think he’d spend all his time moping in self-pity and alienating all the people who care about him.
The film (which is slightly misnamed as the titular Lothario spends all his time in Manhattan) is about a man who loses the woman he feels entitled to end up with and, as a result, undergoes an existential crisis from which only his criminally under-parented 11-year-old neighbor can extricate him.
Jason Behr (TV’s Roswell) anchors The Last International Playboy effectively as dissatisfied Jack, and he successfully nails Jack’s brooding sexy strut and attitude, but the script makes his character so unlikeable that it becomes hard to care whether things turn out well for him. A high point in the film, however, is young India Ennenga (TV’s Treme) — watch out for this actress — with whom Behr develops great chemistry.
With the word “Playboy” in the title and Lydia Hearst on the cover, you might expect this to have some T&A you’d be right. In fact, you won’t even have to watch past the first five minutes, which includes a copious serving of playful nudity. The women in this film are a who’s who of pretty young models drawn from the authentic New York glitterati that it depicts.
The Last International Playboy succeeds in exploring a subset of society that most of us will never penetrate, and it does so with high style. The romantic aspects of the film pull slightly at the heartstrings, but they would have hit much nearer to the heart if we could identify better with the plight of the “more money than sense” crowd.
Special features on the DVD include a commentary track and an undeniably sexy slideshow featuring such renowned co-starring catwalkers as Jessica Gomes, Lisa Cant, Nicole Trunfio, Shannan Click and Leticia Cline.
