At No. 7 in Disc Dish‘s countdown of the 25 best Christmas movies, we have another version of Charles Dickens‘ classic novel A Christmas Carol, but this time a more modern one: Scrooged.
Bill Murray stars in the 1988 film as Frank Cross, a cynical selfish TV executive and equivalent of Dickens’ Ebenezer Scrooge. In this adaptation, Cross’ television station is planning a live adaptation of A Christmas Carol and Cross is far from having the Christmas spirit. During the preparation for the production, though, he’s visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future and — yep, you guessed it — realizes he must change.
Scrooged, which grossed $60 million during its run in theaters, also stars Karen Allen (Superman), Alfre Woodard (TV’s Memphis Beat), Bobcat Goldthwait (Police Academy series) and Carol Kane (The Princess Bride) as the Ghost of Christmas Present.
The comedy has plenty of laughs — no surprise with Murray in the starring role — and was directed by Richard Donner, the helmer behind the first two Superman movies and Lethal Weapon.
Scrooged is available on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment.
This is the third adaptation of Dickens’ beloved story in Disc Dish’s Christmas Movie Advent Calendar, after 1951 A Christmas Carol and The Muppets Christmas Carol.
