South Africa’s submission for the 2010 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the lively road comedy White Wedding, arrived on DVD and Blu-ray on Jan. 25, 2011, from Image Entertainment.
Set against the lovely South African landscape, the film turns on the beautiful Ayanda (Zandie Msutwanta), who is only days away from her “white wedding,” which includes a dress, bridesmaids, a wedding planner, a big reception — the works. The only thing that appears to be missing is the husband-to-be, Elvis (Kenneth Nikosi, No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency), who has gone to pick up his childhood friend and best man, Tumi (Rapulana Seiphemo, Tsotsi), hundreds of miles away.
Elvis and Tumi get derailed more than once on their comic, misguided journey back home, while the bride-to-be wrestles with her own frustrations, anxieties and problems. And the unexpected arrival of Ayanda’s former boyfriend (Mbulelo Grootboom) only adds fuel to the fire.
Directed by Jann Turner, White Wedding received a token two-screen theatrical opening in the U.S. in September, but essentially premiered here on DVD and Blu-ray.
The DVD and Blu-ray carry list prices of $27.97 and $29.97, respectively.
