Our favorite Japanese, flame-throwing giant turtle returns in Gamera vs. Zigra (1971) and Gamera: The Super Monster (1980), was released as a double-feature DVD by Shout! Factory on March 15, 2011. Over the prior year, Shout! Factory issued a half-dozen older Gamera movies, all of them in editions that contain the original uncut Japanese versions of the films, a first for the U.S. DVD market.
These movies are the two final Gamera films produced during Japan’s “Shōwa” era, the 25-year period between 1954 and 1980 when Japanese commercial cinema thrived on giant monster movies a la the Gamera films and, of course, the Godzilla franchise.
In Gamera vs. Zigra, the titanic tortoise battles an alien-creature-turned-giant-sea-monster that’s threatening to destroy the planet.
Gamera: The Super Monster was the last film in the Shōwa series and the final one to be directed by Gamera veteran Noriaki Yuasa. Relying heavily on stock footage from previous Gamera films, the movie finds Gamera up against a bunch of other monsters that he fought in earlier outings, including Zigra.
The Gamera vs. Zigra/Gamera: The Super Monster Double Feature DVD includes a collectible postcard pack, featuring postcards from all eight Gamera films issued by Shout! Factory.
The DVD carries a list price of $19.93.
