New Release: Giulia Doesn't Date at Night DVD

Giulia Doesn’t Date at Night, a strange little romantic drama from Italy starring Valeria Golino (Rain Man), arrived on DVD on Feb. 1, 2011, from Entertainment One.

The movie follows celebrated author Guido Montani (Valerio Mastandrea, Nine), who’s trapped in a loveless marriage to a pretty wife with whom he has an adolescent daughter and coasts through both his life and his career. When the family moves into their newly renovated home, Guido stays in their old apartment to work on his next novel.

Meanwhile, he becomes entranced by Giulia (Golino), his daughter’s swimming instructor. The two set out on a romantic tryst, though Giulia appears to be hidings a secret and a mysterious past. As it turns out, Giulia can’t go out past sundown because she has to return every evening to jail, where she is serving time for murdering her boyfriend. But their fleeting affair, based on abdication, fragility and selfishness, leads Giulia to an extreme decision.

Directed by Giuseppe Piccioni (The Life I Want), this 2009 film made some noise in its native Italy, winning the Best Song and Best Supporting Actress Awards from the Italian National Syndicate of Film Journalists. It was also nominated for three prestigious David di Donatello Awards: Best Actress, Best Music and Best Editing.

Presented in Italian with English subtitles, Giulia Doesn’t Date at Night carries a list price of $24.98 on DVD, but doesn’t come with any bonus features.
