The legendary swashbuckler Zorro arrived on DVD on Jan. 25, 2011, from A&E Home Entertainment. This isn’t Antonio Banderas’ Zorro. A&E released Zorro: The Complete Series, with all 88 episodes of the Zorro TV show that aired between 1990 and 1993.
As well as the action television series, the 15-DVD megaset, which was priced at $99.95, also contains the original Douglas Fairbanks-starring silent film The Mark of Zorro (1920) and Chapter 1 of the 1939 theatrical serial Zorro’s Fighting Legion, as well as other special features.
Filmed in Madrid, Spain, the 1990 Zorro TV show stars Duncan Regehr (TV’s Deep Space Nine) as the masked swashbuckler and tells the story of Zorro from the early 1800s when Los Angeles was the farthest colonial outpost of the Spanish empire, governed by a corrupt mayor. Aided by his mute servant Felipe (Juan Diego Botto) and inspired by the faith and beauty of tavern-keeper Victoria (Patrice Martinez), Zorro, with his trusting whip and steed Tornado, attempts to defend the innocent and attack the guilty.
The television series featured such guest stars as James Bond’s Daniel Craig (Quantum of Solace), the late Pete Postlethwaite (Inception), Adam West (TV’s Batman), Warwick Davis (Harry Potter movies), Andre the Giant (The Princess Bride), Philip Michael Thomas (TV’s Miami Vice) and Jesse Ventura.
The DVD set also offers:
- the never-before-released pilot for the New World Zorro
- trailers for the serials Zorro’s Fighting Legion, Zorror’s Black Whip and Zorro Rides Again
- and a photo gallery from New World Zorro.
The 1990s Zorro show also was released in four full-season sets the same day. Zorro: The Complete Season One, Zorro: The Complete Season Two and Zorro: The Complete Season Three are four-DVD sets priced at $29.95 each, and Zorro: The Complete Season Four is a two-DVD set priced at $19.95.
