Nominated for four BAFTA Awards, the British equivalent to the Academy Awards, British film Made in Dagenham bowed on DVD and Blu-ray Stateside on March 29, 2011, from Sony Pictures Home Entertainment.
Based on a true story, the movie stars Sally Hawkins (Never Let Me Go) as a wife, mother and worker at the city’s Ford Motor Factory, who helps her fellow women workers take on their bosses, a belligerant local community and the government to stand up for better rights. Bob Hoskins (Who Framed Roger Rabbit) plays the sympathetic union representative, and Rosamund Pike (An Education) is an intelligent Cambridge-educated woman who feels trapped tending to her home with a husband who suggests she keeps her opinions to herself.
The R-rated comedy drama was directed by Nigel Cole, who’s no stranger to charming British films about strong women, having helmed the lovely Calendar Girls and Saving Grace. That alone puts this one on our must-watch list.
Made in Dagenham received a limited theatrical release in the U.S., but for most areas, its introduction was this DVD and Blu-ray.
The DVD was priced at $28.95 and Blu-ray at $34.95. Both include these special features:
- commentary with Cole
- deleted scenes
- outtakes
- and a making-of featurette.
