HBO‘s acclaimed documentary Public Speaking, about author Fran Lebowitz, debuted on DVD on May 24, 2011, from Warner Home Video.
Directed by Oscar-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese (Shutter Island) and produced by Emmy-winning documentary producer Graydon Carter (also the editor of Vanity Fair), the film explores Lebowitz’s worldview and experiences. Known for her social commentary on American life, Lebowitz was hired by Andy Warhol as a columnist for Interview and then wrote for Mademoiselle. Then in 1978 she released Metropolitan Life, a book of essays, and then Social Studies in 1981.
As well as footage of Lebowitz herself, the movie weaves together archival footage of such writers as William F. Buckley, Truman Capote, Thelonious Monk, Eugene O’Neill and more contemporary celebrities Conan O’Brien, Alex Trebek and Gore Vidal.
The documentary was priced at $19.98 on DVD.
