New Release: The Unknown War: WWII and The Epic Battles of the Russian Front DVD

The Unknown War movie sceneShout! Factory released the epic TV documentary mini-series The Unknown War: WWII and The Epic Battles of the Russian Front on DVD on May 24, 2011.

The 17-hour series, which was originally broadcast in 20 installments on public television back in 1978, was issued in a 5-disc DVD box set for the suggested retail price of $39.98.

The Unknown War is a sweeping chronicle of the Soviet’s struggle against — and ultimately victory over — the Nazi war machine. From the Nazi’s invasion of the Soviet Union in June 1941 to the Russians’ victorious march into Berlin in 1945, the film takes an in-depth look at the strategies, suffering, heroism and courage of the Soviet experience with footage retrieved from the vaults of the Kremlin. The sprawling documentary ultimately sheds new light on the Red Army’s massive contribution to the Allies’ defeat of Hitler in what the Russians called “The Great Patriotic War.”

Shout! Factory’s release marks the U.S. home entertainment debut of The Unknown War, which was directed by Isaac Kleinerman and Roman Karmen, adapted for television and scored by Rod McKuen, and narrated by Burt Lancaster (Sweet Smell of Success).

The DVD’s bonus features include the following:

  • interview with Rod McKuen
  • analysis by Willard Sunderland, Associate Professor of Russian history at the University of Cincinnati
