Warner Home Video released two renowned war films on Blu-ray on May 24, 2011. Both 1993’s Gettysburg, starring Tom Berenger (Inception) and Martin Sheen (Love Happens), and 2003 drama Gods and Generals were issued in special Blu-ray Book packaging.
Gods and Generals debuted on Blu-ray in 2003, but the new version is the Extended Director’s Cut. This was the Blu-ray debut for Gettysburg and also is a director’s cut. Both movies were directed by Ronald Maxwell (Little Darlings).
Based on the book by Jeff Shaara, Gods and Generals tells the story of the rise and fall of legendary war hero Stonewall Jackson, played by Stephen Lang (Avatar). The biography film stars Mira Sorvino (Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion), C. Thomas Howell (TV’s Southland), Jeff Daniels (Paper Man) and Robert Duvall (Get Low) as General Robert E. Lee.
The PG-13 movie comes with these special features:
- new commentary
- new introduction by executive producer Ted Turner and Maxwell
- music video
- featurette “Journey to the Past”
- featurette “The Authenticities of the Film”
- featurette “The Life of Thomas ‘Stonewall’ Jackson”
- and featurette “Visit Virginia.”
Lang and Daniels also star in Gettysburg. The PG-rated film follows the battle between the Confederacy and the Union in summer 1863. It’s based on Michael Shaara‘s Pulitzer Prize-winning The Killer Angels and filmed at the actual battle locations.
