High School of the Dead sceneZombies rule! Popular zombie anime series High School of the Dead was released on DVD and Blu-ray on June 28, 2011, from Sentai Filmworks and Section23 Films.

Based on the manga series of the same name, High School of the Dead is about a group of high schoolers and the school’s nurse, who take up swords, guns, baseball bats and anything else they can get their hands on to battle a blood-thirsty, flesh-hungry zombie apocalypse. At first about survival, the anime series also tackles societal collapse and the possible decay of the characters’ morals.

Anime News Network‘s Carlo Santos said of the show: “Other recent zombie works in western entertainment have tried to play it ironic, or postmodernist, or just plain silly, but this one goes for straight-up horror and pulls it off admirably.

The High School of the Dead Complete Collection was priced at $59.98 on DVD and $69.98 on Blu-ray.

The episodes are in English and Japanese with English subtitles.
