As director Zack Snyder (Sucker Punch) was preparing the new movie Superman: Man of Steel for its release in theaters in 2012, Warner Home Video gave fans a new Blu-ray set of the comic book superhero’s older films. Superman: The Motion Picture Anthology 1978-2006 was available on June 7, 2011.
Whether you prefer Christopher Reeve or Brandon Routh (sorry, Brandon, we do love you, but Christopher will always have our heart), both of their movies are in the set, with new high-definition film masters and DTS-HD sound.
Priced at $129.95, the Anthology is packaged in a nice-looking box that splits open behind the big S to reveal the discs in a red-cape-covered folder.
The eight-disc boxed set includes all the Superman movies so far: the original 1978 theatrical version of Superman: The Movie, the 2001 expanded edition of Superman: The Movie, the original 1980 theatrical version of Superman II, director Richard Donner’s cut of Superman II, 1983’s Superman III, 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace and 2006’s Superman Returns.
Plus, the set contains 20 hours of bonus features, according to Warner, including the never-before-available original opening of Superman Returns. Also in the special features menu are two high-definition documentaries, Look, Up in the Sky! The Amazing Story of Superman and The Science of Superman, as well as featurette You Will Believe, The Cinematic Saga of Superman, deleted scenes and more.
