The director’s cut of Guillermo Del Toro’s (Cronos) 2007 mutant cockroach chiller Mimic arrived on Blu-ray on Sept. 27, 2011, packed with new special features. Lionsgate assigned the disc the list price of $19.99.
The movie was previously released on Blu-ray in Canada, though not the director’s cut, which is making its premiere on the U.S. release.
The horror/science-fiction hybrid follows entomologist Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino, Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion), who creates a mutant breed of insect that secretes a fluid designed to squash an epidemic created by disease-carrying cockroaches in Manhattan. Though the mutant strain was engineered to die after one generation, three years later, Susan discovers that the species has survived and evolved into a larger, even more gruesome breed of monster that can mimic human form. Yuck!
The Mimic: The Director’s Cut Blu-ray features new bonus materials. Here’s the list:
- video prologue with director/co-writer director Guillermo del Toro
- audio commentary with director/co-writer director Guillermo del Toro
- “A Leap in Evolution: The Creatures of Mimic” featurette
- “Back Into the Tunnels: Shooting Mimic” featurette
- “Reclaiming Mimic” featurette
- deleted scenes
- storyboard animatics
- gag reel
- digital post
Bonus stuff aside, I’m psyched to hear what Mimic sounds like in its Blu-ray incarnation as Del Toro is always one for a rich audio design. And the thought of the film’s cadre of of cockroaches, creeping, crawling and crunching across the screen in a Master Audio mix is pretty intriguing.
