Australian actor Andy Whitfield, who gained attention for his role as Spartacus in the Starz original series Spartacus: Blood and Sand, died on Sept. 11, 2011, from Non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He was the too young age of 39.
Whitfield made fans in the U.S. — including Disc Dish — with his portrayal as Spartacus, the gentle warrior husband who’s stolen into slavery then forced to be a gladiator for the House of Batiatus. When the star was diagnosed with cancer, the series’ second season story was changed to accommodate, shifting to become a prequel with the actions that led up to season one. There was a hope that Whitfield would be able to come back for the third season.
The actor’s career began in his home country of Australia, where he appeared in a number of TV series, including the popular McLeod’s Daughters and The Strip.
Whitfield starred in just one movie, the 2010 horror mystery The Clinic, which was released on DVD by Image Entertainment.
