The comedy-drama romance (okay, we’ll call it a romantic comedy, as well) Larry Crowne, starring Tom Hanks (Road to Perdition) and Julia Roberts (Eat Pray Love), fills the slot of feel-good movie of the summer of 2011.
Directed and co-written by Hanks, the film sets its sights on the happy-go-lucky company man Larry Crowne (Hanks), who finds himself edged out of his job in a downsizing. Larry takes the loss of his job in stride and decides to start over by enrolling at a local college. At school, he quickly falls in with a colorful pack of scooter-riding outcasts, but it’s in his public-speaking class where Larry develops an unexpected crush on his beautiful but troubled teacher, Mercedes Tainot (Roberts). Through his own determination, Larry soon discovers that life can be better than he ever dreamed.
Larry Crowne co-stars Bryan Cranston (The Lincoln Lawyer), Wilmer Valderrama (From Prada to Nada), Cedric the Entertainer (Cadillac Records), Taraji P. Henson (Peep World), Pam Grier (Jackie Brown) and George Takei (TV’s Star Trek). And the movie was co-written by Hanks’ sometimes-collaborator Nia Vardalos, who wrote and starred in My Big, Fat Greek Wedding, which Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson produced.
Released wide to theaters in June, 2011, the PG-13-rated movie grossed a disappointing — given the high-profile cast — $35 million at the domestic box office. Still, the film only cost an estimated $30 million to produce, so it could have been a lot worse.
The modest list of bonus features slated for the DVD and Blu-ray include the following, not counting the usual functions and apps that always accompany Universal’s Blu-ray releases:
- “The Making of Larry Crowne” featurette
- “Fun on Set” featurette
- deleted scenes
