Boy Toy movie scene

Mircea Monroe (l.) and Dawn Olivieri limber up in Boy Toy.

There’s not enough sex to make Boy Toy a sex comedy and not enough romance to make it a romantic comedy. So the movie ends up as a small independent Los Angeles comedy that doesn’t deliver enough oomph to fulfill its R rating.

The film isn’t original, but the possibilites are there: John White (Cherry) is a well-endowed, out-of-work underwear model turned male escort (“‘an escort who doesn’t screw,” as he puts it) who falls in love with his perky yoga instructor (Mircea Monroe, The 41-Year-Old Virgin…) just as his biggest client (Morgan Fairchild, The Seduction) wants to take their relationship to the next level.

That’s it, pretty much. There’s no sex or nudity or any real titillation, nor is there much strength behind the relationship part of the story.

So what is there? Well, there’s Fairchild playing it low-key as the power-MILF. There’s perky Monroe, who’s got a nice smile and cleavage but nothing interesting to talk about. And there’s leading man White, who looks good with his shirt off but sounds silly saying things like, “I”m not used to relationshps … actually feeling stuff, you know?” Okay, so the script is silly too, and it climaxes with an all-too-obvious “family” twist.

The movie is too quiet and too safe, which may be what director/co-writer Christie Wills (Slightly Single in L.A.) was going for. But without the naughtiness or nuance (even a dry-humping scene with a larger lady is softly played), Boy Toy doesn’t make much of an impression beyond its teasing title.

The DVD’s sole bonus feature is a standard making-of featurette.
