Perhaps one of the sexiest movies from the 1980s, 9 1/2 Weeks is renowned for its scene with Mickey Rourke (Iron Man 2) and Kim Basinger (Charlie St. Cloud) in a very wet back alley, which should look even more steamy in this high-definition Blu-ray debut.
Rated R — of course — Nine 1/2 Weeks stars Basinger as a Soho gallery worker who has been single since a painful divorce and Rourke as a wealthy commodities broker who’s always emotionally alone. When they meet, they’re immediately drawn to each other. Their relationship quickly turns to obsessions and takes them into a world of eroticism and emotional awakenings.
Exploring the themes of passion and surrender, the romance movie was directed with flair by Adrian Lyne, helmer of a couple other sexual obsession films, Fatal Attraction and 1998’s Lolita.
Based on the novel by Elizabeth McNeill, the film is co-written by someone who knows plenty about erotic entertainment, Zalman King of the Red Shoe Diaries TV series.
9 1/2 Weeks got mixed reviews from critics and audiences but scored a tidy $7 million in limited screenings in theaters in 1986. It has become a bigger hit over the years in various DVD versions.
The Blu-ray offers the original uncut version of the drama film, which includes footage not released in theaters.
