Inspired by the story of rocker David Bowie during his “Ziggy Stardust” phase, Todd Haynes’ 1998 music-filled movie drama Velvet Goldmine is the finest narrative film ever made about the glam-rock scene of the early 1970s.
The film follows British journalist Arthur Stuart (Christian Bale, The Fighter) who finds himself examining his own past while he researches an article about the mysterious disappearance of former glam-rock star, Brian Slade (Jonathan Rhys Meyers, From Paris With Love). Learning that Slade may have faked his own death to escape the spotlight, Stuart encounters many colorful people from Slade’s storied past, along with a few others who played a major role in his own coming of age.
Co-starring Ewan McGregor (I Love You Phillip Morris) as an Iggy Pop-like rocker and Toni Collette (TV’s United States of Tara) as Slade’s troubled wife, Velvet Goldmine takes its name from a song written by Bowie during the Ziggy Stardust sessions that was eventually issued as the B-side to the UK re-release of Bowie’s “Space Oddity” in 1975.
The Blu-ray includes a newly recorded audio commentary by director Haynes and producer Christine Vachon.
