Rowan Atkinson’s (TV’s Mr. Bean) bumbling British spy returns in the comedy movie Johnny English Reborn, a sequel to the 2003 film about the titular anti-James Bond who manages to catch the bad guys despite doing everything wrong.
Like the first movie, PG-rated Johnny English Reborn wasn’t a big hit in theaters in the U.S. The original movie grossed $28 million and the second topped out at $8.3 million.
This time around, Atkinson’s Agent MI7 is called out of a sabbatical honing his skills at an isolated Asian temple so he can stop international assassins from killing a Chinese dignitary.
The film was directed by Oliver Parker (Dorian Gray) and also stars former Bond girl Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) and former FBI agent Gillian Anderson (Moby Dick).
Both the Blu-ray and DVD contain these special features:
- deleted/extended scenes with introductions by director Parker
- gag reel
- commentary with Parker and screenwriter Hamish McColl (Mr. Bean’s Vacation)
- featurette “The Wheelchair Chase” revealing the secrets behind the stunts.
The Blu-ray also has Universal’s usual Blu-ray extras (Pocket Blu, BD Live and instant streaming through Ultraviolet) plus four more featurettes:
- “The English Files: The Making of Johnny English Reborn”
- “Working With Rowan” with cast and crew talking about Atkinson
- “Gadgets” with Atkinson talking about gadgets
- and “English in Hong Kong” about one of the film’s biggest stunt sequences.
Critics weren’t kind to Johnny English Reborn. Lou Lumenick of the New York Post said the film appeals best to “hard-core fans of the Mr. Bean star and children who laugh at the sight of men being repeatedly kicked in the groin.”
Here’s the movie’s trailer, with plenty of groin kicking:
