Angelina Jolie (Salt) made her filmmaking debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey, a drama movie about the horrors of the Bosnian War in the 1990s.
Nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Foreign Language Film, the movie was written, directed and produced by Jolie, but the acting duties were left to a Bosnian cast.
The movie tells the story of Danijel (Goran Kostic), a soldier fighting for the serbs, and Ajla (Zaba Marjanovic), a Bosnian held captive in the camp Danijel oversees. Acquaintances before the war, the two could have found love together, but as the armed conflict takes hold of their lives, their relationship grows darker, their motives and connection ambiguous and their allegiances uncertain.
Academy Award-winning cinematographer Dean Semler (Dances With Wolves) shot In the Land of Blood and Honey, with features music by Oscar-winner Gabriel Yared (The English Patient).
Rated R, the film was screened in a handful theaters and got mixed reviews from critics and its audience. Newsday‘s Rafer Guzman said In the Land of Blood and Honey is “a tough, clear-eyed look at a ghastly ethnic war, with an admirably wide perspective that affords compassion to both sides.” However, Globe and Mail‘s Rick Groen said of the film, “Although Jolie’s good intentions are easy to admire, those characters are hard to believe and the bloody narrative has an oddly bloodless effect.”
The Blu-ray and DVD allows the movie its biggest audience.
Both formats include these special features:
- deleted scenes
- making-of featurette.
The Blu-ray also has an exclusive Q&A with Jolie and actress Vanessa Glodjo.
