Gerard Butler is the Machine Gun Preacher.

Gerard Butler (Coriolanus) stars as Sam Childers in the 2011 biographical action film Machine Gun Preacher, the true story of Sam Childers, an impassioned biker and ex-criminal turned crusader.

In the movie, Childers is a former drug-dealing criminal who undergoes an astonishing transformation and makes a life-changing decision to travel to war-torn East Africa. After witnessing unspeakable horrors faced by innocent children, he vows to save them at any cost, including his own safety. Childers begins waging a relentless battle against Joseph Kony’s Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), the territory’s renegade militia, leading harrowing missions behind enemy lines to rescue kidnapped orphans and restore peace to their lives – and eventually his own.

Directed by Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball) and written by Jason Keller (Mirror Mirror), Machine Gun Preacher also stars Michelle Monaghan (Due Date), Kathy Baker (Cold Mountain), Madeline Carroll (Mr. Popper’s Penguins) and Michael Shannon (Take Shelter).

Machine Gun Preacher had a limited run in U.S. theaters in September, 2011, following a high-profile screening at the Toronto Film Festival. The R-rated film ultimately rang up some $400,000 at the domestic box office.
