The 2012 History Channel miniseries Hatfields & McCoys debuted to more than 13.9 million viewers, breaking the record for a non-sports telecast in ad-supported cable TV history.
The show pits Kevin Costner (Dances With Wolves) and Bill Paxton (Titanic) in the infamous Civil War-era back country feud that became an American legend.
Costner plays “Devil” Anse Hatfield and Paxton is Randall McCoy, two Confederate soldiers who return to their homes seeking peace after months of battle. Hatfield lives in West Virginia and McCoy across the Tug River border in Kentucky. After an illicit love affair and misunderstandings lead to murder, warfare is triggered between the two familes, causing even neighbors to choose sides.
Tom Berenger (Inception), Powers Boothe (The Avengers), Jena Malone (Sucker Punch) and Mare Winningham (Mirror Mirror) also star in the acclaimed 290-minute movie, which is not rated.
The DVD and Blu-ray include only one special feature, the music video for “I Know These Hills,” featuring Costner and Modern West.
It’s too bad Sony didn’t put featurettes about the actual legend, but a Biography documentary is available on DVD.
