Joel Murray, who is so fine as Freddie Rumson on TV’s Mad Men, stars in the over-the-top independent dark comedy film God Bless America, written and directed for maximum scathing impact by bizarro comedian/filmmaker Bobcat Goldthwait (World’s Greatest Dad).
Divorced, recently fired, and possibly terminally ill, Murray’s Frank truly believes he has nothing left to live for. But instead of taking his own life, he buys a gun and decides to take out his frustration on the cruelest, stupidest, most intolerant people he can imagine — starting with some particularly odious reality television stars. Mad as hell and unable to take it anymore, Frank finds an unusual accomplice in a high-school student named Roxy (up-and-comer Tara Lynne Barr), who shares his sense of rage and disenfranchisement. Together they embark on a nationwide assault on our country’s most irritating celebrities.
What a premise!
Filled with violence and lots of profanity, the R-rated, take-no-prisoners, satirical movie also features Larry Miller (New Year’s Eve) and Melinda Page Hamilton (also of Mad Men).
God Bless America had its world premiere on in September 2011, at the Toronto Film Festival and was made available for video-on-demand in April 2012. Released in U.S. theaters on a limited basis in May, 2012, the film received mixed reviews from critics. As New York Post critic Sara Stewart wrote: “The real problem is there’s just not enough plot on which to hang the message that mean people suck.” Los Angeles Times‘ Betsy Sharkey was kinder: “This funny, sick twist of social satire is certainly locked and loaded, even if its aim is sometimes off.”
As of early June, 2012, the movie had scored some $100,000 at the box office.
Bonus features on the discs include the following:
