Charlie Is My Darling movie scene

Young Mick and Keith hit the road in Charlie Is My Darling.

ABKCO Films acknowledges the 50th anniversary of the formation of The Rolling Stones with the official release of a new version of the legendary 1966 music-filled documentary film The Rolling Stones:  Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965, the music-filled movie that marked the cinematic debut of the band.

We refer to the release as “official” because it’s been available for decades in various unofficial editions!

Directed by Peter Whitehead, The Rolling Stones Charlie Is My Darling – Ireland 1965 was shot on a quick weekend tour of Ireland just weeks after “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” hit #1 on the charts. An intimate, behind-the-scenes diary of life on the road with the young Rolling Stones, Charlie Is My Darling features the first professionally filmed concert performances of the band’s storied touring career.

The 1965 version of Charlie Is My Darling was produced by the Stones’ then- manager/producer Andrew Loog Oldham, who enlisted director Peter Whitehead to travel with the group and film them as they made their way across Ireland. crafted a 35-minute version of the film (director’s cut) that would surface, from time to time over the years, usually seen with grainy visuals and out of phase music. Later, Oldham put together a 50-minute producer’s cut that was first seen in the 1980s. The team of producer Robin Klein and director Mick Gochanaur developed a new 65 minute version after researching and locating additional film footage shot by Whitehead and uncovering a source of first generation audio recordings of the band’s concert performances. The new version, along with both the director’s and producer’s cuts, are included on the DVD and Blu-ray as well as a collectible, bonus content-filled Super Deluxe Box Set.

The film includes live performances of “The Last Time,” “Time Is On My Side” and the first ever concert rendering of “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” among other songs.

Charlie Is My Darling is the latest title in a series of collectable Rolling Stones releases that have been hitting market over the past year or so. Others include Muddy Waters & The Rolling Stones Live At The Checkerboard Lounge Chicago 1981, Stones in Exile, Some Girls, Live in Texas, ’78 and Ladies and Gentlemen…The Rolling Stones.
