In their third movie, Alex the Lion (voiced by Ben Stiller, Little Fockers), Marty the Zebra (Chris Rock, Grown Ups), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith, Collateral) and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer, TV’s Friends) are still trying to get back to New York in Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted.
The zoo animals, who accidentally got transplanted to Madagascar in the original film, join a traveling circus in Europe this time around, hoping it will get them back home. And with the Penguins, King Julien (Sacha Baron Cohen, The Dictator) and Maurice (Cedric the Entertainer, Larry Crowne), the group transforms the circus Madagascar style.
The animated family movie, which is rated PG, also features the voices of Frances McDormand (Moonrise Kingdom), Jessica Chastain (Lawless), Bryan Cranston (John Carter) and Martin Short (TV’s Damages), all new to the franchise with this film.
Madagascar 3 grossed a tidy $216 million in theaters in the U.S., more than the first two films in the series.
Postive critics reviews could have helped. As Denver Post critic Lisa Kennedy wrote: “From time to time the improbable occurs: A sequel outdoes its original.”
