Emily Blunt (Salmon Fishing in the Yemen), Rosemarie DeWitt (The Company Men) and Mark Duplass (Greenberg) star in the 2011 independent romantic comedy-drama Your Sister’s Sister, written and directed by Lynn Shelton (Humpday).
A year after the death of his brother Tom, Jack (Duplass ) is having trouble coming to terms with his loss and has hit the wall, both personally and professionally. Jack’s best friend (and Tom’s ex-girlfriend) Iris (Blunt) steps in and orders Jack to spend a week of solitude at her family’s secluded lakeside cabin. No Internet, no TV, no contact. The problem is, Iris’ sister Hannah (DeWitt), raw from a romantic breakup, has had the same idea of escaping to the cabin…! After an awkward meeting, she and Jack inadvertently have a night of drunken confessions and shared experiences. And then when Iris shows up the next morning, things get even more muddled.
Filmmaker Shelton lets her cast stretch with largely improvised dialogue, which helps add to the movie’s raw, honest tone. The approach seems to have worked for audiences: Budgeted at about $125,000, Your Sister’s Sister went on to ring up some $1.6 million at the U.S. box office over the course of its limited run in theaters in the summer of 2012.
