The AwakeningBritish movie The Awakening is an “I don’t believe in ghosts” ghost story.

Rebecca Hall (Everything Must Go) plays Florence Cathcart, a hoax exposer in post World War I England. She’s invited to a boarding school to expose the alledged sightings of a ghost there. But as she investigates, everything she believes begins to unravel.

The first feature film helmed by British TV director Nick Murphy, The Awakening also stars Dominic West (Appropriate Adult) and Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix).

The movie, which is rated R, was screened in a limited number of theaters in the U.S. and got mixed reviews from critics. Globe and Mail‘s Chris Berube called it “a dull British import,” but New York Post‘s Sara Stewart said the film is “an enjoyably old-fashioned ghost story in the vein of The Others and The Orphange.”
