Naomi Watts (Fair Game) garnered her second Academy Award nomination for her starring role in the 2012 drama-thriller The Impossible.
The film offers an account of a family caught with tens of thousands of strangers in the mayhem of one of the worst natural catastrophes of the modern era: the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami.
In the film, Marie Bennett (Watts), her husband Henry (Ewan McGregor, Salmon Fishing in the Yemen) and their three sons Lucas (Tom Holland), Tomas and Simon are on Christmas holiday at a tropical resort Khao Lak, Thailand. A devastating tsunami hits on December 26, destroying the coastal zone and sweeping up everyone in the flood. Maria and Lucas are separated from the others and, with Maria’s leg badly injured, the two set out for help, finding it from locals and at an overcrowded hospital. Meanwhile, Henry and the boys search frantically for the missing members of their family.
Directed by J.A. Bayona (The Orphanage) and based on the harrowing real-life experience of one family during the Indian Ocean tsunami, The Impossible was well-received by the critics when it was released to theaters in the U.S. in December, 2012 and around the world the next month. Though there was an outcry that the film focuses on the effects of the tragedy on a “Western” and not the thousands of indigenous people whose lives were lost or affected by the tsunami, the film has grossed some $145 million at the worldwide box office.
The film will also be available on April 2 as a digital download, three weeks prior to its Blu-ray, DVD and Video on Demand release.
The Blu-ray and DVD contain the following features:
- Audio commentary with director J.A. Bayona, writer Sergio G. Sánchez and producer Belén Atienza and María Belón (the woman on whom Naomi Watts’s character is based)
- “Casting The Impossible” featurette
- “Realizing The Impossible” featurette
- Deleted Scenes
