A Good Day to Die Hard follows other franchises in having that pass-the-torch installment, where the aging star fights the bad guys with his son.
Bruce Willis (Looper) is back as bad-ass NYPD cop John McClane, and when his estranged son Jack gets into trouble in Russia, it’s John to the rescue. Jack (Jai Courtney, Jack Reacher), a CIA operative, has been imprisoned in Moscow, and after father and son reunite, they must thwart a nuclear weapons heist that could trigger World War III.
The movie was panned by critics, with Richard Roeper summing it up succintly with, “What a disappointment.” One of the few positive reviews still wasn’t all that praising. Dallas Morning News critic Chris Vognar said, “It’s all more than a little silly, but Willis’ presence at least provides undercurrents of easy jocularity.”
The R-rated movie, which also stars sometimes bad-ass Cole Hauser (Olympus Has Fallen), still grossed $66 million, but that makes it the lowest-earning Die Hard film, even including the original, which took in $83 million in 1988 when ticket prices were much lower.
Still, Fox has pumped up the movie’s muscle on the two-disc Blu-ray/DVD Combo with an extended edition of the film (as well as the version shown in theaters) and a host of special features:
- seven deleted scenes
- 15-part “Making it Hard to Die” hour-long documentary
- “Anatomy of a Car Chase”
- “Two of a Kind”
- “Back in Action”
- “The New Face of Evil”
- three pre-vis featurettes
- VFX sequences
- stills galleries for storyboards and concept art
- commentary by director John Moore (Max Payne) and first assistant director Mark Cotone (Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter)
- “Maximum McClane”
- and a downloadable digital copy of the movie.
