“Dos Mas Dos – Propiedad de Pantagonik” These two lines were overlayed over the entire frame of my DVD press review copy of the Argentine comedy 2+ 2. This was especially unfortunate as my eye was already divided between picture and the subtitles….
Diego Kaplan’s Dos Mas Dos is the highest grossing comedy in Argentine history and it’s easy to see why: It’s a smart, breezy romp about 30/40-something affluent professionals who spice things up with a little (actually, a lot of) wife-swapping.
Richard (Juan Minujin) and Diego (Adrian Suar) are partners in an award-winning medical practice. Richard’s wife Bettina (Carla Peterson) is a successful designer, while Diego’s wife Emilia (Julieta Diaz) is a weather reporter more notable for her beauty than her meteorological expertise. After years of working and socializing together, Richard and Bettina reveal their swinger proclivities and urge the other two in join in. What begins as an adrenaline rush eventually becomes complicated…to say the least.
The performances (given that I couldn’t wholly make them out behind the omnipresent overlay) are engaging and energetic, especially Suar, hilarious in his beta-male nervousness, and Alfredo Casuro, who’s terrific cameo finds him waxing emotional about anal penetration while changing a tire.
Even behind the overlay, I can see that Kaplan knows how to compose sleek, beautiful visuals. A music video director and founder of a major Buenos Aires ad agency, he is a genuine stylist.
