Despite rumors that the sitcom would be cancelled, ABC’s The Neighbors scored a second season and even an Emmy nomination.
The TV show stars Jami Gertz (TV’s Entourage) and Lenny Venito (Men in Black 3) as Debbie and Marty Weaver, who move their family into their dream house in Hidden Hills, New Jersey, a gated community complete with its own golf course.
They quickly discover, however, that their neighbors are a little weird. European? A cult? Amish? They’re not sure. Until they find out that all the members of the community are aliens from the planet Zabvron, who’ve been holed up in Hidden Hills for 10 years waiting for instructions on how to get home.
The Neighbors was panned by critics when it was first broadcast, but viewers stayed steady enough for ABC to keep it going. Then its first season finale got lots more praise. In that episode, creator Dan Fogelman (The Guilt Trip) brought in Star Trek‘s George Takei and Star Wars‘ Mark Hamill for some nice homages.
The comedy show’s Emmy nod was for the original song “More or Less the Kind of Thing You May or May Not Possibly See on Broadway,” from the episode “Sing Like a Larry Bird.”
The Neighbors: The Complete First Season DVD contains all 22 episodes plus these special features:
- deleted scenes
- bloopers.
