Jesse and Celine meet again in Before Midnight, the third part of director Richard Linklater’s (Slacker) romance movie series.
Ethan Hawke (The Purge) and Julie Delpy (2 Days in New York) first played Jesse and Celine, respectively, in the 1995 film Before Sunrise. The two couples met a on train, then spent the night walking around Vienna before going their separate ways the followin morning.
In th 2004 movie Before Sunset, Jesse and Celine meet again nine years later, this time during the French leg of Jesse’s book tour.
In Before Midnight, it has been almost two decades since Jesse and Celine originally met on the train. Now in their thirties, they meet at a writer’s retreat in Greece, looking forward to a night of passion. Instead their idyllic night tests their relationship and brings up a discussion of what their future holds.
The R-rated film was screened in only a limited number of theaters, grossing a tidy $8 million. Critics applauded Before Midnight, scoring it with 98%, according to Rotten Tomatoes.
The DVD and Blu-ray contain these special features:
- commentary with Hawk, Delpy and Linklater
- featurette “Revisiting Jesse & Celine”

I was hoping for a trilogy box set with a feature exploring themes spanning the three films.
Before Sunrise and Before Sunset, both released by Warner, have been issued as a double feature previously. I’d like to think they’ll team with Sony, distributor of Before Midnight, to issue all three in one collection!
