Grown Ups 2One of the worst reviewed movies of the 2013 summer season, Grown Ups 2 still grossed a very healthy $131 million when it ran in theaters.

The attraction no doubt comes from the stars, of which this film is loaded. Adam Sandler (That’s My Boy), Kevin James (Here Comes the Boom), Chris Rock (2 Days in New York), David Spade (TV’s Rules of Engagement), Rob Schneider (The Reef) and Steve Buscemi (The Incredible Burt Wonderstone) star alongside Salma Hayek (Savages), Maria Bello (Carjacked) and Maya Rudolph (The Way, Way Back). And added to the cast this time around are Jon Lovitz (A League of Their Own), Shaquille O’Neal and Twilight heartthrob Taylor Lautner.

The story of Grown Ups 2 is basically the same as the original film, except instead of taking his friends and family back to his hometown, Sandler’s Lenny moves his family there and his friends come to visit. Trouble ensues again, this time involving old bullies, wild bus drivers, cops on skis and costumed party crashers.

Sandler again co-wrote the film with Fred Wolf (Strange Wilderness), this time adding Tim Herlihy, who wrote Sandler’s Bedtime Stories and Mr. Deeds, among others. Director Dennis Dugan (Just Go With It) again helmed this sequel, and, given that Dugan and Sandler have now partnered on a slew of not-great movies, including Jack and Jill, perhaps it’s time they sever the relationship. Still, money at the box office does keep coming in.

How badly was PG-13 Grown Ups 2 reviewed? According to Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the movie a compiled rating of 7%, even worse than the original’s 10%. Critic Richard Roeper wrote, “When Taylor Lautner is the funniest thing in a movie starring Adam Sandler and Chris Rock, we’re in trouble.” Detroit News‘ critic Adam Graham liked it a little better, saying, “Friendship, family and breasts: Sometimes that’s all you need.”

The Grown Ups 2 DVD and Blu-ray/DVD Combo pack don’t have too much in the way of special features but do have some. On both are:

  • eight deleted scenes
  • featurette “Shaq and Dante: Police Force.”

The Blu-ray Combo has three more exclusive featurettes:

  • “Look Who Stopped By” about the film’s cameos
  • “Mr. Spade’s Wild Ride” as David Spade gets ready to roll down a hill in a tire
  • and “The Feder House” about the construction of the sound stage where the Feder house was built.

Both formats also offer digital copy via UltraViolet.
