Spike Lee (Malcolm X) gets back to grittier fare with 2013 movie Oldboy, a remake of the 2003 South Korean cult hit of the same name.
The action film stars Josh Brolin (Gangster Squad) as Joe Doucett, who was kidnapped and locked in solitary confinement for 20 years. Now that’s he’s free, he’s got vengeance on his mind and sets up to find out who took him and why.
Elizabeth Olsen (Silent House), Samuel L. Jackson (Marvel’s The Avengers) and Michael Imperioli (TV’s Detroit 1-8-7) also star in the R-rated movie.
Lee’s Oldboy was released to a limited number of theaters and received mixed reviews from critics and moviegoers. TIME Magazine critic Richard Corliss said, “A vivid yet academic remake, this Oldboy is shorter, leaner and lesser.”
